Anthropic's S-1: $88,000 for every American

Anthropic's S-1 puts its total addressable market at $30 trillion. That's $88,000 for every American.

Yesterday, Anthropic filed its S-1. The number: $30 trillion. That's what Anthropic says its total addressable market is. That's $88,000 for every American.

Ignore the financials and just look at what Anthropic says its market is. $30 trillion is about the size of the entire American economy. It's 12 times the revenue of every tech company in the S&P 1500 combined.

And it's not a market in any sense. It's all the work AI could do. Knowledge work, customer service, coding, legal analysis, medical consultation, admin, everything. The potential workload AI could get done.

Divide that by the number of people. $30 trillion is about $88,000 per American. Across every person on Earth, it's $3,700 in potential market from every person on the planet.

Now look at the valuation in the same unit. Anthropic's valuation is between $1.5 and $2 trillion, roughly $4,400 to $5,900 per American. Every child, every baby, every retired person. That's the amount of work people are saying Anthropic can get done now, and the value it can deliver.

Globally, it's about $200 per person on Earth. So the market is pricing Anthropic at roughly 7% of its total market size. 7 cents on the dollar for $30 trillion.

Here's the tension. Everything the world will actually spend on AI this year is roughly $2.6 trillion. The models themselves are roughly $64 billion of that. That's much smaller than the total addressable market Anthropic sees, and much of that investment will pay off over years.

The bigger point: AI agents don't just replace software. Anthropic's entire thesis is that AI agents replace labor. Its valuation and market sizing rest on how much work it can take over in total, and what the total labor savings could be for the country and the world.

It's your decision whether that's a good investment. As soon as the IPO goes through, we'll know what investors think.
