OpenRouter and the price of intelligence

OpenRouter's real change wasn't convenience. It's how AI is priced.

OpenRouter brought to market the convenience of one API call to reach almost any model. What really changed wasn't convenience. What's changing is how AI is priced.

It lets a company and a developer tune every call. Use expensive AI only where you need it, and move other calls to cheaper AI, all on the same infrastructure. That lowers the barrier to optimizing your AI spend. One integration, one bill, and you just change the dial per call.

That dial creates pricing pressure. When switching costs nothing, labs have to compete on price, not lock-in.

84% of OpenRouter's tokens now run on non-frontier models. About 70% of the performance at 2.5% of the price.

This means more affordable intelligence for everyone. It also means more effective intelligence, because the right level of intelligence can be tuned to the right job.

Stripe noticed. In August it agreed to buy OpenRouter for a reported $7.5 billion. That's $7.5 billion dedicated to helping companies save money on AI.
